Mort Sahl - An American Isaiah
By Marina
"Heartland" reads like listening to one of Mort Sahl's on-stage monologues....witty, insightful, wry....and devastatingly accurate political analysis. Mort covers the years that he rose to national renown. Because Mort talks about show business friends, as well as politicians, some of whom are not well known today, it is difficult to follow the careening of Mort's pinball-like narrative; but if you know these names, reading "Heartland" is like undergoing a personal and national life-review of America between 1953 and 1976 (when the book was published).
Mort's career was derailed (a revenge-killing) in the late 1960s by the Surveillance State, which sought to curtail all discussion of Kennedy's murder. Mort, however, saw that a coup d'etat had taken place. He noticed how alleged anti-government dissidents like Angela Davis, Abbie Hoffman, Gloria Steinem, Daniel Ellsberg (of Pentagon Papers fame), and the Chicago Seven, who caused riots at the Democratic Convention in Chicago, were being scripted and subsidized by a Covert Section of the Federal Government.
Sahl noticed that the New York Times published next to nothing from the Warren Commission Report but devoted pages and pages to printing sections from the Pentagon Papers. When the Pentagon Papers hadn't fully deflected attention away from the CIA to the Pentagon, the Mainstream Media began smearing the Army with the "My Lai massacre" as front page news. (See Heartland, pages 106-116.)
When in 1966 Jim Garrison opened up a true investigation of Pres Kennedy's murder, Sahl went to work for Garrison. Sahl and Garrison did their best, but they were up against a Massive Conspiracy. Mort Sahl sought justice and let the chips fall where they may...even if it meant exposing the ACLU's Al Wirin (p 108). Sahl noted that E Howard Hunt had falsified State Dept cables to given the impression that Kennedy had ordered the assassination of South Vietnamese president Diem. Despite Sahl's principled efforts Justice was not served. Justice was firmly in the corrupt grip of the Covert Oligarchy controlling the United States (then and now).
Mort is still alive and has had much time to learn and reflect. Mort could tell us a lot more about the causes and effects of that assassination of John Kennedy in 1963. One wishes that Mort would write a sequel to "Heartland."
Is there no one in Los Angeles to serve as Mort's amanuensis? The country needs his "Heartland II."
_______
Read about Jim Garrison's gradual realization that America was NOT the land of the free but the land of the enslaved -- as he found his investigation of JFK's murder sabotaged at every turn in his books "Heritage of Stone" and "On the Trail of the Assassins."
