Life saving book

A Life saving book I will always be grateful for.
My life had been turned upside down after a severe motor vehicle accident. Numerous injuries left me with intractable neuropathic pain and my right arm paralyzed from the nerves that used to function my chest, lung, shoulder, arm, and hand being torn out from my spinal cord.
After loosing my career, house, and girlfriend, and years of taking a multitude of pain medications to mask the searing nerve pain I was constantly in, I found myself living with my older brother and his family in a completely different city than I'd been living the 15 years previous. Things where dark for me to say the least.
In attempts to learn to manage the pain on its own and get off the all medications I'd been on since being released from the hospital years earlier, I began attending a specialized pain clinic at Stanford University 5 days a week and driving 2 hours each day back and forth. The drive itself became a source of depression and overwhelming sense of failure. A time of particular isolation and reminder of everything that had gone wrong and had changed in my life for the worse.
In hopes of finding some kind of solace and make this drive somehow less of the gauntlet it had become, I desperately searched Amazon for audiobooks of inspiration and change. When Dark Nights of the Soul came across my path the title couldn't have seemed more appropriate, and luckily it was.
That hourly drive each way became a slow incubating cocoon of internal reflection and function. Making the "purposeless" purposeful. Hour by hour arming me with the courage and wisdom I'd been yearning for since the onset of my injury 5 years earlier. Reigniting insights and knowledge I'd had gained from previous interest and readings and experience. Turning my gauntlet into a necessary meditative rebirthing of sorts. Liberating myself from the burden of the 'immediate' sufferings and retooling them into a greater perspective and a part of my journey as a whole being and life to fully live.
What a gift.
As Nietzsche said "He who has a why to live can bear almost any how." And that "how" will be wastefully lost until we find the "why". This book does exactly that. One page (or minute) at a time.

Excellent, lucid, compassionate and comforting

This is an excellent book on dark period in a person's life that is so often pathologized in our culture. It presents a compassionate view of the existential dilemmas of life and the cyclic nature of consolation and desolation that occur in introspective people.
Thomas Moore writes in a very lyrical way and his analogies and examples are very poignant. He talks about the function of dark periods as putting us in touch with soul. This is a great message for a culture that often sweeps pain under the rug or is so busy that there is no value seen in taking time to listening to what pain has to say about life.
This book is a comfort to anyone suffering from any kind of psychological pain from existential crisis to difficult life transitions. It reframes pain in a positive light and offers hope to the reader.
