Chilling Goodness
By SassyPants
Last year I read a novel about Shirley Jackson. That prompted me to buy this book. I am now going to read more of her work. I knew she wrote disturbing stories, but my main association with her is the Erma Bombeck-like Raising Demons. I read that several times as an adolescent and loved it. Now I am eager to read more of her other side.
Castle is about the remaining Blackwell family, older sister Constance, 18 year old Merricat, and elderly and demented Uncle Julien. Merricat is the unreliable narrator and parts of the story unfold through Uncle Julien's memoir in progress. We find out that the rest of the family was poisoned with arsenic. Constance was put on trial but found not guilty. The three remaining Blackwells live in seclusion with only Merricat going to town twice a week for provisions. She is taunted and feared by the townsfolk, who believe her sister is a murderer. The family lives happily enough with their rigid routines, rules, and Merricat's protective "magical spells." Then cousin Charles appears, unwelcome and feared by Merricat. He tries to woo Constance and get rid of Merricat and Julien. But he has ulterior motives. Merricat vows to get rid of him first and tries magical then earthly means. She succeeds, but their lives are changed for a time.
The book was written in 1962, just a few years before Ms. Jackson's death. This is a quick read written with deceptively simple language. However there is a lot of richness in this psychological thriller. Each of the Blackwells are eccentric and damaged in their own ways. They also love and protect their family. They are hated and feared by the people in their small New England town. Sadly, ostracism of people who are different is still a very relevant theme today. If you are unfamiliar with Ms. Jackson, please try her. If it has been awhile, revisit her.

A brooding, gothic masterpiece.
By Frank
Shirley Jackson really had her finger on the pulse of something borderline magical. Our narrator Merricat is one of the most intriguingly twisted characters that I've come across in quite some time. This book has the Jackson touches of schizophrenia, agoraphobia, distrust of neighbors, and she makes it even more poignant by hiding it under a facade of normal family life. I highly recommend this book to you if you want a vintage tale of an insanity shared within a family's tragic past.

Who will cast the first stone?
By S. Horowitz
One of the previous reviews mentions preferring "the novel, 'The Lottery,'" which is dazzling. Yes, it is, but it is a short story.
This novel is also dazzling, and although the author keeps the reader in the dark for the first half of the book, enough clues are dropped so that by the middle to the end, the reader is riveted and incredulous. There is a building dramatic irony that holds the reader, because although the blame is clear, it is also spread around due to the actions of the parents and community leaders. This is a great book, but it must be read carefully because it is a mystery with an unreliable narrator. There is another edition with a scary cover. Personally, I prefer the book without the scary cover, because I think the scary cover gives too much away.
